The Central Regional police command has defended the use of some military patrols embarked on by the Ghana Armed Forces in the Awutu Senya West Constituency.
Citi News’ Franklin Badu Jnr Eight heavily armed military vehicles were seen patrolling the streets of Awutu Bereku yesterday [Tuesday] ahead of the contest between Foreign Affairs Minister Hannah Serwah Tetteh and George Andah.
The two are representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) respectively.
Speaking to Citi News, the Central Regional Police Commander, ACP Kwame Tachie Poku said the patrols in the constituency are meant to send a strong signal to potential trouble makers in the constituency.
“Awutu Senya West is one of the areas we have identified as potential hotspots. These police patrols are there just to provide confidence to the people that their security is in safe hands. And that we are not leaving anything to chance.”
“Any individual or a group of people who ould want to cause trouble during the elections would be ruthlessly dealt with. That is why you see military and police equipment there,” ACP Poku warned.
On the whole, the Ghana Police Service identified over 5000 hot spots in constituencies ahead of the December 7 elections. The Police Service gave assurances it would provide extra security in the 94 constituencies identified as flashpoints on Election Day.
