Tempers seem to be rising at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters in Accra over recent alleged attacks and takeovers of public properties by the invincible forces of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking at a news conference in Accra, the Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Portuphy expressed displeasure at President Akufo Addo failure to condemn recent attacks by NPP goons.
The NDC Chairman emphasized that the beastly conduct of President Akufo Addo’s Invincible Forces will no longer be countenanced.
He indicated that the NDC, as a responsible party is unable to continue to restrain its members while President Akufo Addo continues to turn a blind eye to acts of terrorism being perpetuated since he took over the reins of leadership.
“It is common knowledge that the invincible forces were used by President Akufo Addo to unleash mayhem on his own party members when he was the flagbearer. We are hearing that the Invincible Forces are working with the tacit approval of their boss President Akufo Addo,” Kofi Portuphy noted.
He indicated that the nation has witnessed disruptions in the work and operations of state institutions, unlawful occupancy of public offices, vandalisation of state properties across the country and violent attacks on Ghanaians.
Mr. Portuphy explained that after peaceful co-existence and handing over of power to it by the NDC, the NPP has rather chosen to walk this nation down a dangerous and dark alley.
He accused President Akufo Addo of lack of positive and unifying leadership skills, saying “never should he mislead himself into believing that Ghanaians shall allow him to wound and divide this dear country of ours.”
The NDC Chairman urged civil society, religious bodies, the media and the international community not to blame the NDC if the unacceptable conduct of President Akufo Addo’s Invincible Forces leads to reprisal attacks.
Mr. Porturphy cited some of the attacks which include a group of persons numbering about 30 invading the premises of the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA) attacking staff and management and demanding to be offered immediate appointment.
He said there was similar incident where a group in a convoy of three vehicles went to the Passport Office in Accra and attacked the staff and demanded the immediate resignation of the Director Mr. Alex Grant Ntriakwa.
Mr. Portuphy further stated that the offices of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in Tamale and Accra, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Tamale were ravaged and toll booths seized.
He also cited the despicable conduct of the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum who personally wielded a gun and was followed by thugs to attack and beat NDC supporters including a pregnant woman.
Touching on the brouhaha over accommodation for former President Mahama, Mr. Portuphy described it as an exhibition of extreme bad faith by the NPP administration seeking to crudely attempt to divert attention from the gross embarrassment President Akufo Addo brought upon himself via the shameful plagiarism that characterized his inaugural speech.
He called on President Akufo Addo to apologize to the good people of Ghana for his improper conduct of intellectual dishonesty and academic fraud, rather than continuing to show bad faith after a smooth transfer of state power to him.
Mr. Portuphy appealed to the security agencies to move out from their shells and eschew any fear of being victimized with transfers and arrest those miscreants going around attacking and seizing state properties illegally.
