The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) has congratulated the President-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for his victory in last week’s presidential polls.
The church also commended President John Dramani Mahama for his show of maturity and statesmanship during and after the polls.
A statement, signed by the Moderator of the General Assembly, PCG, Right Reverend Professor Cephas Narh Omanyo, congratulated Ghanaians for comporting themselves and upholding the peace of the country during the election.
“The peaceful nature of the elections and the calm posture of both the winning and the losing presidential candidates, Nana Akufo-Addo and President Mahama and others after the elections have given concrete expression to the often repeated claim that the Ghanaian is generally, God-fearing, tolerant and peace-loving,” it said.
The statement commended the Electoral Commission, the security services, the judiciary, and the media for the important roles they played toward the success of the elections.
It said that “it is our hope that the reassuring sense of responsibility and commitment to the national interest demonstrated in the past few days by the various stakeholders will grow and not diminish”.
The church expressed concern over media reports of attacks on NDC members by NPP supporters and vice versa, and urged the leadership of both parties to condemn those attacks.
“The PCG calls on all Ghanaians to keep on praying with the same enthusiasm as before the elections because we need the favour of God to achieve our collective goals for a prosperous Ghana,” it said.
In a related development, the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), in a statement, congratulated the president-elect on his resounding victory in the elections.
“We cannot help but to express our profound admiration for the high level of maturity coupled with the patience, tolerance, perseverance and the exemplary leadership quality he exhibited before and during his electioneering campaign that won him the landslide victory over other contestants,” it said.
The association urged Nana Akufo-Addo not to forget his promise to make the private sector an engine to grow the economy, and expressed the commitment to work with his government to create an enabling business environment in the country.
“We will also seize this opportunity to commend the outgoing president of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for his contribution to bringing Ghana this far and wish him well in his next endeavour,” it said.
